Tailored workshops for Schools

My mission is to provide a safe and understanding space where people can talk openly about their experiences with loss. I am dedicated to educating my community about the natural, yet often challenging, process of grieving and the universal certainty of death. By fostering a culture of openness and acceptance, my aim is to demystify death, promote healthy coping mechanisms, and empower individuals to find their own paths to healing and renewal.

Addressing this sensitive topic with age-appropriate language and linking it to the PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) curriculum within schools can help foster a healthier understanding of death and loss among students.  The lessons I plan and deliver include:

1. Understanding the Need

  • Normalize the Topic: Death is a natural part of life, and normalizing discussions about it can reduce fear and anxiety.

  • Emotional Resilience: Teaching children about death helps build emotional resilience and coping skills.

  • Empathy and Support: Encouraging discussions can foster empathy and a supportive school environment.

2. Age-Appropriate Language

  • Young Children (4-7 years):

    • Use simple and clear language.

    • Avoid euphemisms that can confuse them.

    • Books and stories that explain death gently.

  • Middle Childhood (8-12 years):

    • Provide more detailed explanations.

    • Encourage questions and answer them honestly.

    • Use creative activities like drawing or storytelling.

  • Adolescents (13+ years):

    • Encourage open discussions and respect their feelings.

    • Provide scientific and philosophical perspectives.

    • Facilitate group discussions and reflective exercises.

3. Linking to PSHCE Curriculum

  • Emotional Health and Wellbeing: Integrate discussions on grief and loss within this context.

  • Healthy Relationships: Teach students about supporting others who are grieving.

  • Living in the Wider World: Include cultural perspectives on death and bereavement.

4. Creating a Supportive Environment

  • Training for Staff: Provide training on how to handle conversations about death.

  • Resources and Materials: Offer books, lesson plans, and activities designed to address death.

  • Safe Spaces: Establish areas where students can go if they need to talk or be alone with their feelings.

5. Implementing in Schools

  • Workshops and Assemblies: Organize sessions that address death in an age-appropriate manner.

  • Parent Involvement: Engage parents through workshops and resources to continue conversations at home.

  • School Policies: Develop policies that support students and staff dealing with grief.
